What Is a UK Sponsor Licence?

A sponsorship licence (also called a sponsor licence) is Home Office approval allowing UK employers to hire skilled overseas workers under the Skilled Worker visa route.

Once approved, your business can issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) to qualified non-UK candidates so they can apply for their visa. You can read our Step-by-Step Guide to Assigning a Certificate of Sponsorship here.

  • Fact: SMEs now make up over 60% of new sponsor licence applications, proving it’s not just for large corporations.

Why SMEs should consider a Sponsor Licence

Many SMEs assume sponsorship is too complex or costly. In truth, it can be a strategic advantage.

Benefits include:

  • Access to global talent in specialist areas.
  • Support for growth and expansion.
  • A more diverse, innovative workforce.
  • Enhanced employer credibility.
  • “For SMEs, sponsorship isn’t bureaucracy — it’s a growth strategy.”

Who can Apply?

  • Be legally registered and trading in the UK.

To qualify, your SME must:

  • Offer a genuine vacancy at RQF Level 6 or higher.
  • Pay the correct salary threshold (at least £41,700 or the going rate, whichever is higher).
  • Have reliable HR and record-keeping systems.
  • Have no unresolved immigration or criminal issues.

Your Step-by-Step: How to Apply for a UK Sponsorship Licence

Step 1: Confirm Job Eligibility

Ensure your role qualifies under the Home Office Skilled Worker occupation list.
Check the correct Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code and salary rate here.

Step 2: Gather Supporting Documents

Submit proof of trading status and legitimacy, such as:

  • Certificate of Incorporation (Companies House)
  • Employer’s liability insurance
  • Lease or premises proof
  • Latest business bank statement or VAT registration
  • HR and recruitment procedures

Documents must reach the Home Office within 5 working days of your online application.

Step 3: Appoint Key Personnel

Assign authorised users to manage your licence via the Sponsorship Management System (SMS):

  • Authorising Officer: Senior staff responsible for compliance
  • Key Contact: Liaison with UKVI
  • Level 1 User: Manages daily licence duties

Step 4: Submit Application Online

Apply via the Home Office portal, upload your documents, and pay the appropriate fee.

Step 5: Home Office Assessment

Expect a decision within 8–12 weeks or use the priority service (10 working days for £750).

UKVI may conduct a pre-licence compliance visit to verify your systems.

After Approval: Your Sponsor Duties

Once approved, your company appears on the Register of Licensed Sponsors.

You must then maintain ongoing compliance as per Appendix D:

  • Keep detailed employee records
  • Report changes (e.g., absences, job role changes, terminations) via the SMS
  • Follow all immigration and audit requirements

Non-compliance may lead to licence suspension or revocation. Do read our article on why sponsor licence compliance matters in 2025 here.

Common Mistakes you should avoid

  • Submitting incomplete or inaccurate documentation
  • Sponsoring roles that don’t meet salary or skill thresholds
  • Weak HR systems without audit trails
  • Failing to report employee or company changes promptly

Pro tip: Arrange a Sponsor Licence readiness audit before submitting your application.
